Before any handyman in Northridge drills into a ranch house wall, it helps to know that the wall may not be what it looks like. A postwar tract house can look like plain drywall and turn out to have a thin coat of plaster, and that changes the column on the install board.
That is why we ask about the house first, whether it sits off Tampa Avenue or Balboa Boulevard, and then give you one flat price for each install.
What comes with every install

Repairs we can fit around your Northridge install
You get a written quote for each repair before we hold the day, so you know the number whether you add it to an install or book it alone.
- Drywall patch. We fill the holes an old TV mount or shelf left behind and texture the patch to match the wall. Our drywall repair page has more on this.
- Door repair. We do door repair on a door that rubs the frame or will not stay shut, and we rehang it square so it closes and stays closed.
- Sliding doors and screens. We take care of sliding door repair, screen door repair, window screen repair and window screen replacement with new mesh, and we can put a patio screen door back on its track.
- Faucets and fans. We can swap a faucet for one of the same kind and hang a ceiling fan where the box can carry it.
Which column a Northridge ranch house falls in
Northridge is mainly postwar ranch tract houses, with apartments along the boulevards, so three of the four columns are the ones you are likely to meet.
- Plaster. An original room in a postwar ranch house often has a thin plaster coat over lath.
- Drywall. A remodeled room is usually drywall, and so are most of the apartments along Reseda Boulevard and Nordhoff Street.
- Brick or concrete. You mostly find this on the fireplace wall, or as a block wall in an attached garage.
- Metal studs. These are less likely in a ranch house, but a newer apartment building could be framed in steel.

What goes on the wall in a Northridge tract house
- The TV. The long wall of the family room is a good spot, and if the fireplace is on that wall, you have a choice of two columns. Our TV mounting page lists the brackets for each.
- Picture hanging and mirrors. A hallway of family photos or a heavy mirror over a dresser is priced as picture and mirror hanging.
- Shelves in the garage or the den. An attached garage has plenty of bare wall, and floating shelves look good in a den. Either way the bracket goes into the studs first.
- Curtain rods. If you hang heavy curtains over a big slider to keep out the Valley summer heat, we add a middle bracket so the rod stays straight.
- Anchored and assembled furniture. We strap a tall dresser or bookcase to the wall, and our furniture assembly price covers anything still in its box.
One morning for a new place off Balboa Boulevard
Everything can go up in one install day, whether you have bought a house off Balboa Boulevard or rented a place near the university.
- One text with the total. Each piece is priced from the board, and we add them together and text you the number.
- A full morning. Five or six installs fit in one morning, and you pick which room goes first.
- Brackets on hand. We bring the anchors, and the bracket, shelf or rod should be at the house when we arrive.
- Student rentals. If you are renting near the university, please get the landlord's okay before we drill. We can patch the holes when you move out, quoted in writing.
What to ask us before your Northridge install day
Do you come out to North Hills and Winnetka?
Yes. North Hills next door and Winnetka to the south are on the same install days, and the board does not change.
Does it cost more if I am farther from the 118 Freeway?
No. The install and the wall set the price, so a house up by the 118 Freeway and an apartment near the Northridge Fashion Center pay the same for the same wall.
Why does plaster cost more than drywall?
The screws have to travel farther through plaster and lath to reach a stud, and an older wall takes more care. Plaster is one step up from drywall, and brick or concrete is the highest.
